"You don't have to be great to start,

but you have to START to be GREAT."

BALLET

This is a very technically demanding dance style.  Classical Ballet forms a grounding and foundation in most Dance technique. Due to the method of training a ballet student can master other styles of dance more easily, it particularly compliments Modern Jazz, Theatrecraft and Lyrical styles of Dance. Even Commercial and Street Jazz can draw upon a strong Ballet background. Ballet like all dance requires discipline, commitment and concentration to reach an accomplished level. Technical training in class leads to the reward of performing on stage or achieving Dance examinations. Ballet is personally recommended to all students wishing to gain a well-balanced training and certainly for those wishing to pursue a career in theatre.

MODERN JAZZ

Modern Jazz at Detail covers many elements, basically it is a rhythmic dance style which originated in America before coming to England.

The style has a strong technical base, progressive steps, shape development, kicks, elevation and turns which all need stamina strength and flexibility. This highly energetic dance style is improved greatly by the study of Ballet and Tap Dance.

Modern Jazz encompasses a fusion of IDTA Syllabus, Lyrical dance, tricks and tumbles, flexibility, commercial style and choreography.  We dance as individuals and as a group, it works on self-expression, confidence, body language and story-telling abilities, as well as choreographic development.

TAP DANCE

Tap at Detail is taught in a very musical manner, with the rhythm being at the forefront of the study. Tap Dance has evolved from an American dance form. The dancer uses their feet to strike the floor, beating out different rhythms, wearing tap shoes which have small metal plates on the toe and heel to give the distinctive sound. Tap dance is a historical theatrical art form often seen on stage in musicals. Great for students who enjoy music or play an instrument as tap is a percussive dance form.

At Detail, we follow the IDTA syllabus for Tap grades which are great for developing rhythm, tone and style. Relaxed ankle isolation and a solid understanding of counting is the basis of good tap. As well as teaching the IDTA syllabus, we strongly believe in teaching different styles of tap from traditional to funky all music styles are explored.

FREE JAZZ

The Free Jazz class focuses on building technique and performance skills in an environment without syllabus, just for the joy of movement. Students are challenged to explore a range of dynamics and qualities of different and experimental dance styles in order to access different ways of moving; which in turn develops their own choreographic skills and confidence when working towards IDTA examinations. This class sharpens the imagination, and improves improvisation, all skills required to be a good dancer. We do not have a uniform in this class, so it allows the student to express themselves in their choice of dance wear.

DANCE FITNESS

We normally recommend 13 years plus. This is primarily an adult to young adult class. Detail will tailor your workout with you depending on ability.

This class is open to any adults or young adults who would like to work on their own fitness. We use a combination of dance stretches and strengthening techniques to help improve posture, flexibility and strength. We always finish the class with mindfulness and relaxation.

THEATRECRAFT

Theatrecraft is a wonderful style of dance for the student who loves to be versatile. This IDTA exam is fun, energetic and varied, including Bollywood, Lyrical, Street, Latin, Ballroom to name a few. It has a strong Ballet background and requires the student to step in and out of different styles during the exam. The syllabus is extremely well designed for the beginner, it really entices young students with clever ways to learn to count to music and be characterful.

Theatrecraft is the style of dance often seen on the West End and Broadway it encompasses many disciplines and is a fantastic style to start dance for those who feel Ballet is a little too disciplined at the beginning.

ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY

Anatomy is normally taught as a private lesson, though in the past we have done group work. We teach elements of anatomy during all IDTA classes, but the exam itself is a very rewarding and interesting study. Using Bobbie Drakeford’s publication alongside some other great study guides, the Anatomy and Physiology Diploma is a real aid to the developing and discerning dancer. Having a greater understanding of dancing from the inside out, teaches the dancer to listen to their body more and have a greater comprehension of how to be more mindful in their training.  This exam is essential for those wanting a career in dance or wanting to progress to teaching.
